career: Construction

What's it all about

From structural engineering to stonemasonry, construction is a huge sector with a wide variety of roles. If you’re a practical person, are interested in how things work and are put together, construction could be the industry for you. Construction can mean anything from bricklaying to road laying, but whatever you do it’s sure to be a very hands on career from start to finish.

Construction is something that involves very little theory and lots of practical knowledge, which is best gained through doing. Any degree course in construction will likely be a hands on one, buy you’re more likely to find a btec course or apprenticeship that covers all the skills you need to start your career.

Routes in

You do not need formal qualifications to work in most areas of construction, but employers usually want people who have some on-site experience. If you have not worked in construction before, you could find a job as a labourer to get site experience. Once you are working, your employer may be willing to offer you training.

You may be able to get into this job through an apprenticeship scheme with a building company. You will need to check which schemes are available in your area and what the requirements are – they’re likely to ask that you’ve got some experience under your belt though so before applying try and do a week or two with a local company.

Another option is to take a course in your own time. These will be recognised qualifications but won’t put you in thousands of pounds worth of debt for it. The courses will still be extremely practical and hands on, but the course will have a curriculum and structure for you to follow which will prove to your future employer what skills you have.
