career: Hospitality and catering

What's it all about

Hospitality and catering offers many career opportunities – in hotels, restaurants or pubs, at tourist attractions, outside events and private parties. A job might even allow you the opportunity to work in multiple different areas, and experience more than one set of responsibilities.

There are a range of career paths available, and they all come with loads of opportunities for promotion. A degree isn’t required to gain a high position in the industry, experience and skills are highly valued.

Starting at an entry level position as, for example, a bar tender will likely result in you moving up the ladder to being a manager. The industry can be split into three different areas:

  • Accommodation (hotels)
  • Food (catering)
  • Drink (bars)

Routes in

Hospitality and catering jobs are very much hands on skills and work. This is best learned through on the job training and vocationally, so you certainly don’t need a degree. Whether you want to learn cooking, baking, service skills or anything else, you can do it by learning on the job or through another course.

Apprenticeships are available in large number of different areas in hospitality and catering. These are popular for a number of reasons. First of all, you get extensive, detailed training on the job. You get a deep understanding of how the industry works, which you might not get by going through a degree. Second of all, you’re technically an employee so you will be getting paid as you learn. Not only will you gain a qualification, but you’ll also be earning money rather than getting in to piles of debt like the people studying at university.
