career: Engineering

What's it all about

There are so many different areas of engineering to work in. Chemical, automotive or robotics just to name a few. Careers in engineering are constantly changing and new processes and technologies are being developed all the time. This allows engineers to stay on the ball and react to new problems and challenges in their chosen field every day.

Each engineering discipline requires professionals with very specific skill-sets. However, each and every area of this sector is as complex as the next. Consequently, all engineers need to have strong mathematical skills, logic and the ability to rise to intellectual and practical challenges. Because there are so many different job roles, there is also many different routes into the career such as degree, apprenticeship or NVQ.

Routes in

Although engineering is a very technical and complicated subject, you don’t need a complicated degree to get into it. Instead, apprenticeships are an increasingly popular option for those looking to get into the industry.

This means working full time as an engineer while also learning and being trained on the job. No only do you get paid and trained, but you also gain recognised qualifications that add to your CV and credibility as an engineer.

There are hundreds of different job roles within the engineering industry, one of which being roles within the military. These are also done through apprenticeships and you will likely go through the same military training as other members joining the armed forces.

There are also courses available at btec level and diplomas than can give you an extra qualification without getting into massive student debt and going to university. You may even be able to do this part time while getting some work experience.
