career: Charity work

What's it all about

Charity work might sound just like working for nothing at first glance, but it has the potential to be extremely rewarding in many ways. Not only that, but there are a number of different options for you to choose from when it comes to getting involved in charity work.

Any work experience, even if it’s voluntary, is work experience and will look brilliant on your CV. In fact, charity work will look particularly impressive on your CV because it shows employers that you’re hard working and passionate about making a difference. These are all things that come across very well on a CV.

Routes in

To start a career in charity work, you will likely need to spend a year or two volunteering. While there is paid work available in the charity sector – such as the marketing and head office roles – they’re usually positions that will be taken up by people that have previously shown a passion for the cause. A great way of doing this is to spend time volunteering.

To be a volunteer, you don’t need any higher qualifications. Most roles will probably require GCSEs but you can certainly gain an entry level position without having attended university or college. However – some permanent paid roles will require more specific experience and qualifications.

For example, if you wanted to go into a media related role within the charity sector, experience in that area would be helpful. This doesn’t mean you need a degree, just that it’s a good idea to collect as much work experience as possible and evidence of your enthusiasm to learn.
