What's it all about

Advertising is one of the more creative industries, and creativity can’t be taught. With plenty of different routes in to the industry – university doesn’t have to be the one you take.

Advertising covers a number of different things in terms of media, but the main idea is that working in advertising means spreading a message and encouraging people to look at a product.

Working in advertising can either mean you work in-house at a company and manage just their advertising or you work in an agency with a number of separate clients. As one of the creative sectors, skills and experience are highly valued by employers so a good place to start your research is to look into which companies near you offer work experience in that area.

Creative industries happen to be the most competitive ones to break into, and advertising is no exception to this rule. The best place to start is by getting your CV up to date with as much experience as you can get.

Even finding work experience is a competitive game as there will likely be another fifty people just like you fight for one work experience placement. You need to make sure you stand out to the employers so that they see your potential as a future advertisement wiz. The best way to do this is to create a portfolio of ideas and pitches to demonstrate your passion and creativity.

Advertising apprenticeships are also available and sometimes are linked to PR apprenticeships. This means you can earn money while gaining the qualifications you need to get a job – so no debt and lots of hands on experience!
